Eyeing High Research Rank, URI Must Double R&D Spending, Recruit Faculty, Report Says

If it is to grow into a top-tier public-research university, the University of Rhode Island must double its spending on academic R&D by 2015, persuade state voters to borrow $100 million to help recruit up to 30 new faculty members, award more grants to its scientists, bolster efforts to commercialize new technologies, and collaborate with industry, the URI Commission for Research and Innovation concluded in a report released last week.
